Article 1 – Freedom, Equality, Solidarity

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."

Explanation of Article 1

All human beings are born free and have an equal right to freedom. However, the freedom of one cannot be at the expense of the freedom of others. "Equal" does not mean that people's individual situations or abilities are identical. But states are obliged to do everything they can to ensure that people have equal opportunities for development. We are all obliged to treat other people "in a spirit of brotherhood," that is, to respect every person as an equal person.
