Article 20 – Freedom of assembly and association

1. "Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association."

2. "No one may be forced to belong to an association."

Explanation of Article 20

The right to join other people, to call meetings, to demonstrate, and to form clubs or unions is a very important right and indispensable for a democracy. Often it is only possible to enforce demands or to stand up to state power together with other people. The state must enable these rights, for example by making public streets and squares available and protecting against interference by other people, e.g. by providing sufficient police protection at a demonstration so that counter-demonstrators do not hinder them.

The freedom to join and join an association with other people also means that no one can be forced to join an association. No one may therefore be forced to join a party or a union.
