In Austria, there is an alarming trend that a large proportion of unaccompanied refugee children disappear from official care. According to the Ministry of the Interior, over 4,700 refugee minors
evaded the asylum process last year, with the whereabouts of the majority of them unknown. This corresponds to almost 95% of the unaccompanied refugee children who applied for asylum in Austria
during the same period. This raises serious concerns about the safety and well-being of these children, who are at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking.
One of the main reasons for this is the lack of guardianship for unaccompanied refugee children from the moment they arrive in Austria. This often leaves the affected children on their own for
months. This lack of guardianship is accompanied by poor accommodation conditions and inadequate access to education, which constitutes a human rights violation.
Amnesty International calls for urgent measures to be taken and implemented to ensure the protection of refugee children seeking protection within Austria's borders.
